It's a Small World After All

This has been my view for the last 6 months:

Pretty boring, huh? I still get out once a week for Fun Day and have only had to cancel a couple times. Besides that and going to my parents every couple weeks, I don't get out

much.

I go grocery shopping about once a month, sometimes I stretch it out more.  I stay pretty

isolated to protect myself, especially after my bout with pneumonia in November.  

The TV is on almost all day because after a while the silence is deafening.  When there's

nothing recorded, I rely on Wendy Williams to entertain me.  And sometimes I'll even sit

through the back to back judge shows that plague daytime TV.

This is where I fold my laundry, take naps, read, edit photos and surf the web.

My last chemotherapy treatment for my ABVD regimen is Wednesday.  Hopefully, the last 
one I'll ever need.  Right now, I don't know what my future holds, but I hope it includes lots of energy and a strong immune system.

Flea Market Style Fireplace Mantel

The tree and Christmas decor is down, and I've got my mantel setup until I switch it up for spring/summer. I kept it light and airy with a vintage twist to keep it interesting. I love to hit up garage sales and antique stores for neutral pieces so that I can mix it up throughout the year while still maintaining a cohesive look (and my budget). The key to decorating with neutrals is to layer different textures and heights.

Josh & I found the mirror propped against a neighbor's trash while taking a walk one day. We snagged that bad boy and slapped on a coat of antique white paint. I am not too proud to take someone else's trash and turn it into my treasure. Consider it "green".

I got the mercury glass finial in a TJ Maxx clearance aisle for a couple dollars. The large glass cloche came from Marshall's and is a staple in all of my decor. The candle in the glass vase came from a boxed set of decor that included a glass pedestal and river rocks. Not exactly my style together, but I've re-purposed the pieces. The glass pedestal now lives in my kitchen and holds my salt & pepper and olive oil.

I purchased the vintage style clock from HauteLook with a referral credit that I had saved. The metal finial came from a thrift store that I used to love, it's since turned a bit junky. :(

The "dream" sign was a Christmas gift from etsy last year. I posted about it here.

I found that old little bird at a garage sale for less than a quarter. He was a little chipped, but I couldn't pass him up. The mini cloche that is over him came from an estate sale and I think it probably was meant to house a round of brie. The large hurricane and candle came from my mom's house. I'm also not too proud to accept a family member's castoff. ;)

The white chippy candle holder came from a garage sale and the candle is just a cheapo from Walmart.

I don't know who this lady is, but I adopted her frame and all from a garage sale for less than a quarter. She used to live in my bathroom etagere but I decided she should be displayed on my mantel.

Goals for 2012

I have a lot of high expectations for 2012. After this past year, it has got to be good. There were a lot of projects that had to be put on hold after my diagnosis in July, but I hope to tackle them in this new year. I've learned that I need to take the time to enjoy life, and not just tackle my to do lists. I finish my chemotherapy treatments at the end of January, and after that here is what I will be up to:

1. Take the time to read a book a month. I have a list started, but if you have suggestions, leave them in the comments!

I just finished this one after Christmas.

2. Simplify and declutter. I have already started a list of donations as well as a list for Craigslist. I'm tired of digging through a closet of old clothes I don't wear (and I'm talking some pieces that I've had since high school, I know, I know...). Books I've read, home decor that is no longer my style, etc. I take good care of my "stuff" so sometimes it sticks with me longer than it should.

3. Something I've wanted to do for a LONG time, is transfer all of my pictures onto CDs. I haven't done this in years. It's going to be a huge undertaking. Also, filling all of my empty picture frames.

4. Eat for my health. There is something about being told you can't have something that makes you REALLY want it. I dream of salads and grapes...and sushi... I want to eat more fresh foods and cook at home more frequently.

5. Exercise more. I don't love cardio. But I am going to at least get down with my Just Dance game and take walks when the weather is nice. If I forget to close my curtains and you see me flailing around my living room, keep driving... I have a lot of work to do to build my endurance up to what it used to be pre-ginorm chest tumor.

6. Spend more time on Fancy, even after I go back to work. It has been a great outlet for me these last few months.

7. Blog once a week-ish. I'm not going to make any promises.

8. Finish the second floor of our home by the end of 2012. This will mostly be a Josh thing, but I am hoping to help more when I am done with treatments. He has been very diligent and working up there when he has time.

9. Have a little vegetable garden. I started one last year right before my life turned into chaos. Needless to say, that didn't last long.

10. Dig up the monstrosity that is my backyard. The previous owners left remnants of their pool and surrounding plants. Time to rent a bobcat and dig it all up. It's seriously a jungle by July.

11. Do a daily devotional or read the bible daily. I already have the book on my nightstand, just need to stick with it.

12. After all of the people who reached out to me these last several months, I really want to spend more time helping others, outside of my job.

This year I am so thankful for all of my friends and family that have supported me through this crazy time in my life. Quick & Cost Effective Chicken Noodle Soup

When I cook I look to a recipe for inspiration, but rarely follow one closely. Part of our budget plan is to stretch leftovers and pantry staples to make hearty and pocket-friendly meals. One of our sweet church friends brought us a whole chicken the other night, so I cut the remaining meat off the bones to save for this soup.

Here’s what I did:

Chop 3 long and skinny carrots.
Chop 1 medium onion.
Add to stock pot and drizzle with a little olive oil. Add garlic. I didn’t have any fresh, so I had to use powder.
Sautee for about 5 minutes to soften them a bit.

After the 5 minutes were up, I added 6 cans of chicken broth.
Add the shredded leftover chicken.
Season to taste with:
Salt & pepper
Basil
Oregano
*This is what I had on hand. You can also use parsley, thyme, etc.

Bring to a boil.
Turn heat to low and simmer for 20-30 minutes.
While the soup is simmering, make ½ a bag of egg noodles according to the package. Drain and add to the soup when done. You can cook the noodles in with the soup, but you would need a lot more broth because it will soak it all up.

That’s it. Very basic so you can add whatever your family likes.

My Favorite Things: Beauty Products

Since the holidays are coming up, I thought I'd go over some of my favorite things. These products would make great stocking stuffers! Feel free to link this to your hubbies :)

1. Smith's Rosebud Salve I love to use this stuff as a lip balm but it is also perfect for chapped skin. If you get a red nose from a cold or cracked hands in the winter, this is a must! Plus, the tin is too cute to pass up.

2. L'oreal True Match Super Blendable Makeup I am on my second bottle of this product. It blends really well and there are a TON of shades to choose from. I am N3 Natural Buff.

3. Mary Kay Enriched Moisturizer Formula 1 I have sensitive skin that tends to be dry and this moisturizer keeps me soft and flake free.

4. Milani Minerals Blush in Luminous This is a dupe for NARS Orgasm, and will look good on almost all skin colors. I'm on my second pan, just make sure you use a real blush brush and not the dinky one that is included.

5. Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion This stuff is a must to wear under eyeshadow, just make sure to blend the edges into the skin. My only complaint is the shape of the package. When you start having trouble getting product out, pop the little plastic thingy out of the bottle and you will be able to reach into the curves where all that stuff is hidden!

6. Revlon Extra Curl Lash Curler You may not think it makes a difference, but it does. Trust me.

7. Cover Girl Lash Blast Volume I usually have a difficult time finding a regular wear mascara that will hold the curl in my lashes, no problem with this one!

8. MAC 224 Tapered Blending Brush I love this brush for blending, use small circular motions. Repeat after me "I will NEVER use the little sponge applicator that comes with eyeshadow ever again."

Chemotherapy and Hair Loss

I miss my hair. I still catch myself watching youtube videos from my favorite gurus, and thinking "oh, I've gotta try that.." Or scaring the crap out of myself when I get up in the middle of the night (like right now) and catch my reflection in the window. I even have dreams about my hair. It will grow back, I know.

I had super long hair before all of this began. I was even going to jump on the feather hair extension bandwagon.

I didn't dye it, or heat style it too much. I washed it every other day and always conditioned.

One week after my first chemotherapy treatment, I donated my ponytail to Locks of Love.

I liked my new hairdo. I only got to spend a few days with it, but it was easy to style. I picked out my wig the same week. I tried on a bunch of different styles, but chose one that felt like me...which happened to be long with side swept bangs.

One week after donating my hair, my worst fear was coming true. Every time I touched my hair, strands would fall. I had my hair clipped back that day and I was afraid to wash it or brush it. Finally, I went into the bathroom, pulled the clip out of my hair, and with it came the majority of my little ponytail. I was crying hysterically, as I just kept pulling the hair from my head. It seemed surreal. I filled trash cans. I knew I couldn't spend the next couple of days doing this, so I called my mom and told her it was time. That night, my aunt came over and buzzed the rest of my hair right off. For some, that decision can seem terrifying. I was definitely nervous. But I was going to lose it anyway, right? I wasn't going to let cancer play with my emotions and control my life. Seeing a stray one inch strand of hair was a lot easier to handle than a bunch of long hair coming out all over the place.

I wear my wig here and there. If I'm at home, I'm usually running around like an ostrich with all 10 hairs sticking up. Most of the time, I throw on a bandana. Two etsy friends have sent me hats, which are my favorite things, especially now that it's getting colder.

I don't have a good picture, but here I am in my green hat, chowing down on a picnic.

Although thinning, my eyebrows and eyelashes are hanging on. Thanks to my Bohemian blood, I've always had plenty of brow to spare, so now I tweeze less and make due with what I've got left. My lashes are thinning more noticeably than my brows. I have a "normal" looking amount on top, where they used to be full and long. And my bottom lashes are sparse. If I can hang on to this much for the rest of my treatments, I will be happy!

And for those who are wondering. And I know you are. Body hair is business as usual. Kinda.

Halloween Costumes

Josh and I have always done some sort of couples costume for Halloween. Some years we have them planned out, only to change them at the last minute. Our first Halloween, we had only been dating for a little over a month. I was still in college, and our short-lived tradition was to rent a two story hotel room and have our party there.

2006: Bonnie & Clyde

2007: Football Player & Referee. We're cheesy and we like it.

When we got married, our parties changed. College days were over and we packed my family into our little apartment, hovered over bowls of chili and mummy dogs. We dressed up our dogs and sang karaoke.

2008: Brangelina.

In 2009, we purchased our fixer upper. I was making the infamous chili while my dad and hubby were painting around me. That was our first night in the house.

2009: Classic Halloween..Zombie & Witch. The angel on the end is my Gramma.

Last year, my plan was to do Romeo & Juliet from the Baz Luhrmann version of the movie. I even bought the angel wings. But Romeo's costume looked half-assed and so we ran out late at night to search for something.

2010: Snow White & Dopey

This year, I'm going to be Sophia from the Golden Girls. My husband wouldn't go along with the act, so he and his brother are going to be Dale & Brennan from Stepbrothers. I've got my Gramma's duster, I borrowed a wig from the Cancer Center, I bought huge glasses from the Dollar Store and I am ready to rock it.

Money Saving/Earning Websites

I have been a member of online survey and point earning websites since college. A lot of scammy ones have come and gone, but there are a few that have really paid off for me. I don't dedicate much time to doing surveys any more, but still earn points on a daily basis. You're not going to earn thousands of dollars, but my tips will help you when you are on a spending freeze and pinching every penny you have.

Our current situation forced us to go over our budget with a fine-toothed comb to make ends meet. We both agreed that we would have to go on a spending freeze, which involved no shopping, no lunch buying, and cooking at home instead of grabbing fast food when we're worn out. I plan on sharing my tips, in hopes that they may help others, as well as motivate me to keep going! Just because we can't afford to go shopping, doesn't mean we still don't "need" certain things, like shoes or dog food. Below are some websites that have helped us with that "extra stuff" that just doesn't fit into the budget. (click each title to go to website.)

1. MyPoints

There are several ways to earn points through this website. After signing up and filling out ALL of the "profiles", you will start to receive e-mails. Make sure you check ALL of these e-mails, scroll to the bottom of each and click "Get Points". It's usually an orange button. This is the easiest (and FREE) way to earn points. If it is not an offer that interests you, still click the button to earn your points! You won't have to sign up for anything that you don't want to. The points will add up faster than you think, and before you know it, you will be on your way to a $25 gift card.

Now, if you ever do any online shopping, make sure you always check MyPoints to see if they are partnered. Their partners are always changing, but Target, for example, is usually an option. With the holidays coming up, this will save you a lot of time and stress. Last year I did about 90% of my shopping through MyPoints and had a ton of points to show for it. Each website will have a different point value...Shop A may offer 4 points per dollar spent, while Shop B may offer 10 points per dollar.

Once you have enough points, you can redeem them for a gift card. I have redeemed gift cards for Old Navy, Target, Walmart, Marshalls/TJ Maxx, and Panera Bread Co. You can refer 5 friends per month and earn 25 points each if they sign up. I have posted a signup link on my facebook for my friends who are reading :).

2. E-Bates

One of my favorite online retailers is no longer partnered with MyPoints, hopefully it's just temporary. I have also used E-Bates for my online shopping. Similar to MP, you earn a percentage of your purchase and then they send you a check when you choose to cash in. Earlier this year, I purchased 2 Entertainment books for $20 total, and then E-Bates sent me a check for $7. I plan on using this website with my holiday shopping to get the most bang for my buck. Sign up by clicking on this link.

3. NoMoreRack.com

I have signed up for a lot of "discounted" shopping websites (HauteLook, BeyondtheRack, etc). Their nice, but I haven't saved as much as I have with NoMoreRack. They offer 8 deals a day, all deeply discounted. And shipping is only $2! When you refer friends, you earn points and can cash them in when they have free deals as part of their daily 8, or at any time through friendrack. When you sign up, they give you a $10 gift card to use. I hadn't used mine until recently, and had accumulated several $5 credits that were sent periodically. I purchased 2 items, valued at $75. With the discount plus credits, I paid $1 total. ONE DOLLAR. The credits were applied to shipping as well. You're welcome.

4. 1Saleaday.com

This last website isn't a point earning opportunity. Just a heck of a deal! They offer 5 deals a day, similar to NMR. Heavily discounted, cheap and sometimes free shipping. Not much to say except go check it out!

Side Effects of Chemo & Updates

I am almost to the half way mark! Next Wednesday will be my 6th chemotherapy treatment. I had another PET scan to see my progress with ABVD & received good news! The scan showed that all activity has resolved, with residual soft tissue in my chest where the 10cm tumor was. I still have to finish all 12 ABVD treatments (whine) and radiation is still a possibility. Still just trying to take things one day at a time.

My last treatment took more of a toll on me than the others. I guess because the cancer is almost gone, so there are only "good" cells left to work on for the most part. I found that my fatigue started taking over my Saturday as well. Before I just had to worry about getting through Wednesday, Thursday & Friday of chemo week.

We did the Light the Night Walk with a great "Team Sarah" turnout. Thanks SAMC coworkers for coordinating the team & shirts! <3 We raised a few thousand dollars, I don't remember the exact number (chemo brain--see below).

I also did Zumba to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. 2 HOURS of it! Sorry, no action shots :)

Now on to the dreaded chemo side effects. Some of them have gradually gotten worse and I fear they will continue to do so as treatments go on. Come on January!

1. Chemo Brain--It's real. Tonight I left a burner (on low) and didn't notice until I was putting the leftovers away. I also forgot to make garlic bread to go with our pasta, which I had planned for two days. If you know me, you know that I am a task master, planner, micro manager, mother hen, the person that holds it all together. Now I feel like a feeble old lady who can't remember what she's said 5 minutes ago half the time. I've been noticing that my hubby has been remembering more than me at times. I sincerely don't remember when our new trash day is, apparently it's Thursday because he already put it to the curb. And if you know my sweet husband, you know this is a big deal. Lately, I have to re-read a string of text messages to remember what our conversation was about if more than a few minutes have passed. For those reading, please don't be offended or get your feelings hurt if you've sent an unanswered e-mail or phone call. I simply forget.

2. Fatigue--This one is a time stealer. On chemo Wednesdays, I normally come home and sleep right into Thursday afternoon. Which is followed by a nap that might last until Friday. I love to sleep, don't get me wrong. It's not a normal tired. It's an emergent need to lay down and pass out, not something you can push through with a 5-Hour Energy drink.

3. And then there is the Insomnia--which is why I'm up writing this blog :) Once the poison starts to work it's way out of my system, the steroids take over and sleep is an effort to obtain. PITA.

4. Nausea--LUCKILY, I have not thrown up. Nausea hasn't been too terrible, thanks to my meds. But the general queasiness, especially on chemo day, is enough for me. I usually eat breakfast, try to stomach a small bland snack during infusion, and that's it for the day. I can't even look at the lunches they bring around without my stomach churning. It's just a sandwich! I have weird associations, I guess.

5. Heartburn/Indigestion--Chemotherapy is known to break down the lining of the stomach. This can cause a burning sensation up to my throat, or stomach pains. Prilosec had been doing the trick, but this round has been a little rougher.

6. Mouth Pain--I have not had mouth sores, thankfully. But related to #5, chemo can also strip the mouth of the mucous membranes. I relate the sensation to a constant state of that burning you get after eating too many Mike & Ike Hot Tamales. Not horrendous, but annoying. It was really bad after chemo #1, and it hurt to swallow water. I've found that ice helps.

7. Hair Loss--It sucks. I miss my hair. I have a little more than peach fuzz on my head. My eyebrows & eyelashes have hung on, though I can tell they are thinning. However, I still have the pleasure of shaving my legs. As Gma Jean would say, "Ain't that a bitch."

8. Food Restrictions--Things I miss: sushi, a medium rare steak, and salad. The risk of bacteria is too dangerous for my pathetic immune system. I basically have 2 days each cycle that I can sneak one of these treats when my WBC count is up.

9. Bone Pain--I get a Neulasta shot to help boost my white blood cells to prevent infection. This causes the bone marrow to expand, thus causing bone pain. It hasn't been too bad lately, thanks to a tip from another HL victim. I've been taking Claritin, and for whatever reason I have very little pain now. Before, I wouldn't be able to sleep through the night because of the pain.

10. Skin Changes--My skin is drier. It calluses more easily. And now I'm striped. The Bleomycin can cause discoloration, so anywhere I've scratched (mostly during chemo #1 when I was still experiencing the itching symptom) is darker than the rest of me.

That's about it. So when you ask how I'm doing and I tell you that "I'm fine", this is what I really mean. <3

The CT scan showed a mass in my chest, which explained my shortness of breath...I thought I was just out of shape! Apparently this diagnosis is common among the 15-40 crowd. While there is nothing you can do to prevent Hodgkin's Lymphoma, early detection is always a good thing.

I'll update when I know more. Thank you for all of the prayers!

I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season. I took a little break from blogging to enjoy my family, my how time flies! I can't believe it's 2011 & I'm hopeful that I'll make every day count! Here are some of my goals for the new year:

1) Be more organized-I already have my 2011 calendar color coded. Organization is always easier in January. I hope that I can maintain it all year!

2) Live frugally-I have started coupon clipping...well I've always clipped them, but I want to start learning how to combine them and actually use them! It's a bit overwhelming, I get frequent emails from Clippin' With Carrie and I have started small, just focusing on a couple stores and the things I know I need.

3) Blog more-Hopefully soon I will get a chance to share some things I've learned along the way. First up, legitimate points & rewards websites. I started freshmen year in college and I have been hooked ever since.

Tide Stain Release In-Wash Booster Packs

I will never buy another stain removing product again, as long as these little packs are around! I practically rolled around in my garden this past spring, and the light pink sweats I thought would be ruined forever made it out alive with the help of Tide. I absolutely hate having to spray and scrub a stain only to have it fade 50%. Just throw one of these packs in the wash and you are good to go!

Windex Multi-Surface Antibacterial

Love, love, love this! Countertops, spills, remotes, phones, handles, glass surfaces, bathrooms, TVs...the list goes on. I use this stuff almost daily. If you live with pets, children, (or a man) you must try this! If you don't have a lot of room to store 10 different cleaning products, you will love this too :)

Glade Plug Ins Scented Oil

Again, if you live with any of the creatures listed above, you need this. I get a 9 pack of these at Sam's Club and have 2 or 3 plugged in on our main level. You can smell these as soon as you step onto our porch. My sense of smell isn't the greatest, so I'm always worried that my house will smell like a dog to someone with a sensitive nose. These make me feel better :) My favorite scent is Fresh Linen.

Shark Steam Mop

Okay, so I don't own one of these (yet). But boy, do I want to! I borrow my mom's and use it on my hardwoods and tile to get a deep clean. It's also a good arm exercise :) Just be careful that you don't leave it in one spot as it cools down. I have a nice rectangular "brand" on my hardwoods from this mistake!

Swiffer Sweeper Wet Mopping

I loathe mopping. The sloshing bucket full of water, the wringing of the mop. UGH! I save this task for my husband. (Thanks honey!) One day, I will own a Shark steam mop of my own, but for now I like to use these for quick clean ups. They are perfect for my bathroom floor, or a spill in the kitchen. Little to no mess involved.

Dryer Sheet Flower Tutorial

Recycled Dryer Sheet Flower Tutorial

You will need (for each flower):

1 pipe cleaner

4 used dryer sheets

1. Stack the 4 dryer sheets on top of each other.

2. Fold the stack accordion style, making the folds about an inch. You want to fold the width vs. the length.

3. Take the pipe cleaner and twist it around the middle of your folded sheets, just enough length to fasten it securely.

4. When the sheets are secured, start separating them to create the petals.

5. Put in vase, bottle, jar, etc. and enjoy!

Although the forecast is depicting summertime weather, I am in a fall state of mind. My closet is free of warm weather clothing and ready to be stuffed with sweaters and boots. I'm in the middle of the household deep clean to get ready for fall & Halloween decor. I've made pumpkin bread, white chicken chili and sipped hot chocolate. All with the air conditioning on. :(

I've already figured out where I will put my Christmas tree this year, double checking with a measurement. Should I use a smaller tree and decrease the fire hazard or shove our over sized tree in the corner and hope for the best? But first! Halloween.

The menu, the costume, the decor! I have costume ideas but haven't settled on anything. I took Martha Stewart's QUIZ and she thinks I should be a Glampire:

What I do know is, I'll be making my Grandma's chili and mummy dogs:

The first weekend in October is going to be a great way to kick off my favorite month. Friday October 1st is Belleville, IL Chili Cook Off. We go every year and I'm hoping for nice chili eating weather!

We have finally decided on how we are going to tackle our 2nd floor! We have 3 bedrooms and one bathroom upstairs, including a spacious landing at the top of the stairs. We have put this project off for a long time because we thought we would be tearing out ALL of the plaster and installing drywall. Luckily, we decided to hire someone to repair and resurface the plaster, which is a huge relief! Now, we just have to find someone reliable and fair, since we have had a long run with awful contractors.

At the back of the house, overlooking the garden, is a slanted ceiling, finished attic. Now the last time it was updated was probably when I was an infant, so we have a fair share of work to do. There is no light, unfinished & damaged flooring, and an awkward closet.

The Plan:

1. Clean up electrical & install recessed lighting to brighten up the space!

2. Touch up drywall and areas where A/C duct work was added.

3. Replace window (too many ladybugs made this area home last year!)

4. Paint ceiling and exposed spiral duct.

5. Paint the walls a warm neutral color and paint the paneling cream to mimic bead board.

6. Hire someone to finish the floors! (we did our fair share on the first level.)

That's all I've got set in stone so far. I'd like to build out one of the 2 small closets and create a shelving system because the angle is really steep and goes from about 5 foot to 2 inches. Furnishing this room could be tricky because of the short, slanted ceilings.

It happens every July. When the hot and sticky St. Louis summer has done me in, I get Christmas fever. I start humming carols and worrying about where I'll put my ginormous Christmas tree. I spend my "free time" flipping through December magazine issues from years past and searching every craft website I can remember for inspiration.

What gifts can I make this year? Recipes? Decorations? Will I finally have the guts and time to join the Christmas Choir or just belt out my very favorite songs from the congregation? Oh Christmas, such a hectic time of year. I like to start preparing early so that I can enjoy every last minute of Tacky Sweater party bliss and baking cookies with my family.

I have some alone time this weekend, so I am going to start my crazy search. Do you have any ideas or inspiration for me? I'm going to go spend some time with my BFF Martha. Merry Christmas (in July)!

After spending hours in one of my gardens today, I am hoping to see a lot of this by June:

I planted around 70 Gladiolus bulbs and a dozen clumps of mixed Dahlia today. I have a gaping blister to prove it but I while spare you a picture. We found the bulbs when my mom and I were at Sam's Club last weekend. I bought a box of Phlox too that I will put in on Monday along with the wildflower seeds my husband bought for me! I wasn't really sure which end of the Dahlia tuber was supposed to face up since it was in big clumps. I hope everything turns out okay. On the packaging, it says that the bulbs have to be dug up, dried out, etc in the fall. Is that true?! I don't dig up my Daffodils, Tiger Lillies, or Irises and they come back every year.

Josh and I stopped at an estate sale this morning. Estate sales always make me kind of sad. I was feeling sorry for the sweet little old man who had lived there, wondering what his life had been like and if the people running the sale were his children. And then Josh spotted something peeking out of a box on the top shelf in one of the closets. Being a foot shorter than him, I persistently said "what...what?" until he moved the box closer to the edge so that I could see. A DVD cover with a pile of people in positions I have never heard of. Foul. I have never come across porn at an estate sale before! Josh rushed me through the house and I managed to grab a few cloches along the way. And then I went home and washed my hands.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Dear Family of the Deceased, Please remove all porn, playboys, and other paraphernalia from the home before proceeding with a sale. No one wants to know that your dad, uncle, whatever was a dirty old man. Thank you.

The Makings of a Gardener

As some of you may know, the old house that Josh & I purchased last year sits on a 1/2 acre lot filled with gardens. At some point, there must have been an avid gardener living here because amidst all the dried up organic debris and 5 years worth of leaves, we had tons of flowers popping up last spring and summer. I imagine it like the Secret Garden, dead and decrepit, and I want so badly to see it all come to life again. Last year we cleaned up the leaves and tore out a few overgrown bushes and 20 yucca plants. We transplanted our roses (the poor shocked little things) and played with a few flowers, mostly annuals.

This week I have started cleaning out the garden beds. I pulled weeds from the long bed lining the side of the house. I cleaned up my circle garden in the front yard and mixed in new dirt after discovering that my mounding perennials were poking through the ground.

We raked lingering leaves and picked up the seed pods from my magnolia tree.

I'm so excited that the weather has warmed up. I've been working through my lunches all week so I can rush home and dig in. I'm hoping that we can finish the clean up this weekend so we can tackle our lack of curb appeal.

We have garden beds lining every nook and cranny of our yard. We also have a massive rectangle of dirt from where the previous owner's pool used to sit. The plan is to turn that into a veggie garden with the assistance of my Grandpa. Confession: I'm totally overwhelmed. I don't know what to put where or how much sun each plant needs. What kind of dirt do I have? Heck if I know. Which part of my yard faces south? Good question!

If anyone has any tips or advice, I would love to hear it! I am going to put some ideas on paper, and if it doesn't turn out how I hope this year, there is always next year. Right?

My husband is out doing a little grocery shopping (yes!)...so I thought I'd post a quickie with some inspiration. Lately I've been trying to define my design style. According to the HGTV quiz, it's "Romantic". I went to the library last week and brought home a dozen decorating books. Well from that, my style seems to be a mix of Modern Country, Thrifty Chic, Well-Worn, Cottagey, & Southern. According to the new issue of Real Simple, my style is a cross of Casual Chic and Vintage Eclectic. I still don't really know what to call my taste, but what I do know is that I love me some neutral decor. I love color, don't get me wrong, but neutral is so relaxing. I love being able to go shopping and not have to worry if something fits in with my color scheme. Here are a few "Neutral" Rooms courtesy of BHG.

Josh & I went garage saling this morning hoping to find some goodies for our house. We weren't having much luck...until I spotted this deacon's bench:

Once I saw it, there was nothing else that could catch my eye. I looked at the price, hoping it wouldn't deplete my funds for the day...it was 1/3 of the price of the ones listed on craigslist! I sat on it and gave it a wiggle, not even a budge. Once I had paid for the bench, I spotted these two glass jars:

This sums up how I've been feeling lately. We only have 4 weeks until we have to move in and there is still a lot to do! Per our original schedule, contractors should be out by now..but the only thing finished is our tuckpointing. We still have not found a replacement for the electrician that bailed on us and each project has gone up considerably in cost. The house is an overwhelming mess right now but I just have to keep hope that everything will work out JUST FINE!

My mom and I went saling on Saturday and found some great stuff. I found a lounger for my patio and a light fixture for my bathroom. I purchased a few sets of vintage table linens for $1 a piece and other knick knacks I couldn't resist. Here's a sneak peek, all for $2.75! In the background you can see what my walls look like after stripping the wallpaper. Those walls will be my project for the next 2 weeks!

Josh and I just purchased our first home. It's a 1925 bungalow on 1/2 an acre with 5 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and in need of a lot of TLC. Here's a sneak peek of the before photos. Above is the front of the house.

Here is a view from the back yard. It has a huge brick patio with it's fair share of weeds.

We completed the demolition stage and filled up a dumpster in no time. This week we have HVAC, plumbers, and tuckpointers coming in to help us out. There's plenty of work to do while we are stuck outside.
